Jaydeep P. Bardhan and Matthew G. Knepley Dept. of Molecular Biophysics and Physiology, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago IL 60612 Computation Institute, The University of Chicago, Chicago IL 60637 Abstract We present two open-source (BSD) implementations of ellipsoidal harmonic expansions for solving problems of potential theory using separation of variables. Ellipsoidal harmonics are used surprisingly infrequently, considering their substantial value for problems ranging in scale from molecules to the entire solar system. In this article, we suggest two possible reasons for the paucity relative to spherical harmonics. The first is essentially historical—ellipsoidal harmonics developed during the late 19th century and early 20th, when it was found that only the lowest-order harmonics are expressible in closed form. Each higher-order term requires the solution of an eigenvalue problem, and tedious manual computation seems to have discouraged applications and theoretical studies. The second explanation is practical: even with modern computers and accurate eigenvalue algorithms, expansions in ellipsoidal harmonics are significantly more challenging to compute than those in Cartesian or spherical coordinates. The present implementations reduce the “barrier to entry” by providing an easy and free way for the community to begin using ellipsoidal harmonics in actual research. We demonstrate our implementation using the specific and physiologically crucial problem of how charged proteins interact with their environment, and ask: what other analytical tools await re-discovery in an era of inexpensive computation?

978 - 0 - 521 - 11309 - 0 - Ellipsoidal Harmonics : Theory and Applications

The sphere, because of its high symmetry, is what might be called a perfect shape. Unfortunately nature is imperfect and many apparently spherical bodies are better represented by an ellipsoid. Consequently in calculations about gravitational potential, for example, spherical harmonics have to be replaced by the much more complex ellipsoidal harmonics. Their theory, which was originated in the ...

Power filtering method with controllable inductance for eliminating thyristor rectifier load harmonics

In this paper, we propose a Controlled Inductance Power Filter (CIPF) to solve power quality problems in industrial DC power supply systems. This method is based on the theory of magnetic potential equilibrium combined with active hybrid filter technology. Initially the system structure and filter wiring scheme are presented and the equivalent circuit is performed with the mathematical models o...

ON MAXWELL'S STRESS FUNCTIONS FOR SOLVING THREE DIMENSIONAL ELASTICITY PROBLEMS IN THE THEORY OF ELASTICITY

The governing equations of three dimensional elasticity problems include the six Beltrami-Michell stress compatibility equations, the three differential equations of equilibrium, and the six material constitutive relations; and these are usually solved subject to the boundary conditions. The system of fifteen differential equations is usually difficult to solve, and simplified methods are usual...

Ellipsoidal electrogastrographic forward modelling.

The theoretical and computational study of the electromagnetic forward and inverse problems in ellipsoidal geometry is important in electrogastrography because the geometry of the human stomach can be well approximated using this idealized body. Moreover, the anisotropies inherent to this organ can be highlighted by the characteristics of the electric potential associated with current dipoles i...
